Standard sheets come in 4x8 feet (32 sq ft) or 4x12 feet (48 sq ft). Our calculator optimizes sheet count and accounts for waste from cuts and openings.

Tip: For new construction, 1/2 inch drywall is standard for walls and 5/8 inch for ceilings. Moisture-resistant green board is recommended for bathrooms.

Drywall finishing levels (Level 0 through Level 5) determine how many coats of joint compound and how much sanding is required. Level 3 is standard for rooms that will receive textured finish or wall coverings. Level 4 is the most common for painted walls — three coats of compound over all joints and fasteners. Level 5 is the highest quality, adding a skim coat over the entire surface for a perfectly smooth finish under glossy paint or critical lighting.

Seam placement and taping affect both structural integrity and appearance. Stagger seams so they don't line up across adjacent rows, and avoid inside corners for end joints. Use paper tape for the first (tape) coat in flat joints and inside corners — it provides the strongest bond. Mesh tape is acceptable for the fill and finish coats on flat joints but should not be used in corners or on ceilings. Apply three coats minimum: tape coat, fill coat, and skim coat, allowing 24 hours of drying time between coats.

Sheet types vary by application: standard white board works for most walls and ceilings, moisture-resistant green board or purple board is required in bathrooms and basements, and fire-rated Type X (5/8-inch) is mandatory for garage walls, multi-family dwellings, and any assembly requiring a specific fire-resistance rating. Type X contains glass fibers that help the board maintain integrity longer during a fire.

For DIY drywall installation, you'll need a drywall T-square, utility knife, screw gun, drywall lift (rentable for ceilings), mud pans, joint knives (6-inch and 12-inch), and a pole sander. Budget $50-$100 for tools if you don't own them. Cost by component typically breaks down as: sheets 40-50% of total, joint compound 20-25%, tape and screws 10-15%, and labor or tool rental the remainder. Hanging sheets yourself and hiring a finisher can save 30-40% compared to full professional installation.

  • How many sheets of drywall do I need?

    Measure the total wall and ceiling area in square feet, divide by the sheet size — 32 sq ft for 4×8, 40 for 4×10, or 48 for 4×12 — then add 10% for waste from cuts and openings around doors and windows. A typical 12×12 room with 8-foot walls and a ceiling requires roughly 12–15 sheets. Our calculator accounts for sheet size selection and ceiling inclusion.

  • How much drywall mud do I need per sheet?

    Plan on approximately 1 gallon of pre-mixed joint compound per 4–5 sheets for a standard three-coat finish (tape coat, fill coat, and skim coat). A 4.5-gallon bucket covers roughly 20 sheets. You'll also need drywall tape — about 1 linear foot of tape per square foot of wall area for all seams, screw dimples, and corners.

  • What thickness of drywall should I use?

    Use ½-inch drywall for most wall applications, and ⅝-inch for ceilings and any fire-rated assemblies. Moisture-resistant green board or purple board is recommended for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. Some codes require ⅝-inch Type X (fire-rated) drywall on garage walls shared with living spaces and around fireplace enclosures.

  • How much does drywall installation cost?

    DIY material costs run $0.40–$0.65 per sq ft for sheets, mud, tape, and screws combined. Professional installation — including hanging, taping, mudding, and sanding to a Level 4 or 5 finish — costs $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft. Finishing alone (taping and mudding) typically runs $0.75–$1.50/sq ft if you hang the sheets yourself.

  • How many screws do I need per sheet?

    Use approximately 1 screw per square foot of drywall, which works out to roughly 32–36 screws per 4×8 sheet. Space screws every 12 inches along each stud (every 16 inches on center), sinking them just below the paper surface without breaking through. You'll also need coarse-thread screws for wood studs and fine-thread screws for metal studs.
